Overhead power lines

PowerlinesUnless you have a large high voltage overhead powerline crossing your property, it's unlikely that you'll find elevated exposure levels from powerlines. It is generally only caused by 400 kV, 275 kV and 132 kV lines in close proximity to the house in question.

The cables from high voltage overhead powerlines produce powerfrequency EMFs. As a rule of thumb, the bigger the pylons, the higher the voltage, and the further the EMFs extend from the cables. 132kV lines can carry voltage very differently on the 2 sides of the middle cable, this creates higher fields than you might think.

In some urban areas, power cables can be routed above, or along the wall of a building. These will generate high fields within the room(s) they are next to, even though they are low voltage cables.

If you have a visible overhead power line within 100 metres of your property however you may well want to measure exposure in your house and garden to make sure.

The best way to check power frequency exposure levels (caused by the distribution and use of electricity) is to use a suitable instrument such as an EMFields PF5 meter, which measures both electric and magnetic fields. You can also buy another, cheaper (but still highly accurate) alternative such as the MagneMeter, which measures magnetic fields only, but these are the fields which have been researched the most with respect to health effects.
