Home smart meters
This section is primarily for UK people.
Ideally, do not allow your electricity meter to be changed to a Smart Meter, especially if the meter is inside your house. At present, in the UK at least, you have the right to refuse this change - but not to have an existing one removed. We strongly recommend that EHS people do not have a Smart Meter. If the meter is in a box on the outside wall, then that is probably ok for most people other than highly electrosensitive ones. If you are sensitive to WiFi type signals then you need to ask to have the Home Area Network (HAN) transmitter switched off even if it is outside.
The main (electricity) Smart Meters in the UK all currently use mobile phone circuits for their long distance communications - so you can treat them as if they are a mobile phone in a wall-mounted box. This was decision by the companies - if you or another person in the house regularly uses a mobile phone in the house, then you will never win any argument to get rid of the meter.
If you are EHS and avoid all RF generating devices (mobile phones, DECT cordless phones and WiFi) inside you home then you have a case for avoiding irradiation by their meter. You can screen a cupboard around the meter (see screening section) to prevent the rest of inside of your home being irradiated. That will stop the meter sending its readings to the electricity company. They have the right to have their meter in your house, but you can claim the right to screen the rest of your house to keep the microwave levels down. This will cause a big argument. The main options then are: They could re-fit an analogue meter or move their Smart Meter to a box on the outside of your house at their expense. A third option is to try take you to Court - but they are the polluters in your private space and you should have a reasonable chance of winning. You could contact

Powerwatch and others asked that the HAN network should be available as a fully wired/cabled option, but that has not been done for any of the Smart Meters currently being installed.

We hire out and sell instruments to measure electromagnetic field exposure from sources such as electricity substations and transformers, powerlines and mobile phone masts, and offer a number of protective shielding solutions for those who find themselves highly exposed. We also provide a list of some EMF Surveyors on our surveys website.
