Electricity substationsSubstations are found frequently in residential areas, supplying us with the electricity we have come to depend on. Substation equipment generates electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which also radiate from the associated cables, which are usually underground when they leave the substation. It is not easy to know where the cables from the substation go. You can find very high fields above the cable, but these fall away quite quickly. They can create high fields in a property if the front garden is small or it runs past the side of a house and/or garden. Net currents commonly arise when there are faults between 2 substations. These can give rise to unpredictably high EMF levels, affecting the house and garden.

The best way to check power frequency exposure levels (caused by the distribution and use of electricity) is to use a suitable instrument such as an EMFields PF5 meter, which measures both electric and magnetic fields. You can also buy another, cheaper (but still highly accurate) alternative such as the MagneMeter, which measures magnetic fields only, but these are the fields which have been researched the most with respect to health effects.
